Local Or Offshore?   by John Wise

Since the dawn of internet wagering, this question has been asked. "Should I play with a local shop guy or with an offshore sportsbook?" So much depends upon the individual's situation in making this choice. Especially in knowing the credibility of the local "man".

Speaking from experience, I have been cheated far more by the local guys than the offshore establishments. With some of the local vendors, you can hear "God Bless America" playing in the background and smell the hot apple pie as they tell you how honest they are. Many times "God Bless America" is covering up "The Flight of the Bumble Bee" that you will hear when they sting you and take off. And the smell of apple pie covers up the malodor of horse droppings that you are left holding when they skip on you.

Not to say that all local guys are crooks. Nor all offshore establishments are upstanding. I have had good experiences locally and bad experiences offshore. But overall, much better offshore. And it is getting better for the players all the time.

Are you a big player? Your chances are better offshore. Many of these top flight books are used to big action. How about convenience? Most of the offshore guys operate from opening lines to the last game goes. Odds? There is tremendous competition between the offshore books. Great odds and bonuses abound. No more 120 to make 100 point-spread lines and two-team parlays at 12 to 5, like I experienced many times locally.

Am I partial? Certainly. I advertise for offshore sportsbooks. But only the player can be the judge of his own situation. The final decision belongs to him. He must accumulate the facts and make his own decision. From my experiences and situations, it became a "no brainer". I totally believe that the offshore sportsbook is the way of the future.
